First Timer’s Guide to Batanes: The Philippines That Feels Like Abroad

Batanes doesn’t feel like the Philippines most people know. It feels quieter, slower, and almost untouched by time.

Located at the northernmost tip of the country, closer to Taiwan than Manila, Batanes is defined by rolling green hills, dramatic coastlines, and stone houses built to withstand powerful typhoons. It’s less about checking off attractions and more about experiencing a completely different way of life.

Why Batanes Is Different

The Ivatan culture is at the heart of Batanes. Their traditions are shaped by survival—strong winds, isolation, and the sea. One of the most iconic symbols is the vakul, a traditional headpiece woven from palm fibers, used to protect against harsh weather.

Homes are built from limestone and cogon grass, designed to last through storms. There are almost no traffic lights. People leave their doors unlocked. Life moves at a pace that feels unfamiliar—in the best way.

What to Do

On Batan Island, head to Marlboro Country, where open grasslands stretch endlessly under wide skies. Horses graze freely, and the wind never really stops. Vayang Rolling Hills feels almost European in its landscape, while Naidi Hills offers a lighthouse view over the coast.

A trip to Sabtang Island is essential. Take a traditional boat ride early in the morning and explore villages like Chavayan, where centuries-old stone houses are still lived in today. Morong Beach, with its white pebbles and natural arch, offers a different kind of coastal beauty.

Practical Notes

  • Flights are limited—book months in advance
  • Budget around ₱3,500–5,000 per day
  • Internet is unreliable—disconnecting is part of the experience
  • Best time to visit: March to May
